Evening at the Mandarin Garden
This view shows the magnificent neon sign atop the Mandarin on Pender – glowing ominously in the eerie fog that was so common along False Creek at the time (due to the numerous beehive burners) – the old BCER gasometer looming ominously over the club. The upper crust would leave the tonier clubs downtown after closing and come to Chinatown to keep the party going. There were lineups going up the stairs to the Mandarin which occupies the full upstairs floor – here is such a night.
